The Jersey City Gardening Coalition

The Jersey City Gardening Coalition (JCGC) was formed in the spring of 2008 by several Hilltop residents who wanted to share gardening tips and work toward developing more private and public gardens in the Hilltop area.  JCGC is a member of the American Association of Community Gardens.

The JCGC welcomes all types of gardeners from Hilltop and beyond -- those who tend window boxes, front yard flower gardens, backyard edens, neighborhood church property and even indoor aeroponic set-ups.  They hold local garden round-robins on a regular basis and have made special field trips to places such as the Cloisters Medieval Garden.  One day trip saw the JCGC visiting the community gardens on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and then ending the day at the Annual Pickle Festival on Orchard Street.

JCGC is very interested in cooperating with as many environmental, community, local business and gardening organizations as possible.  They have already started communications with:

  • Jersey City's Brunswick Community Garden

  • Rutgers University Cooperative Extension

  • USDA's Community Food Projects

  • Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey

Adopt-a-Lot

Besides garden gatherings and excursions, they also work to rally support from local government officials on greenspace projects.  Currently, they are working with Ward C Councilman Steve Lipski to determine if two lots in Hilltop are available for the Adopt-a-Lot program. They look forward to working with the Department of Parks and Forestry on securing appropriate sites.

Community Garden Planned

JCGC is on the lookout for an abandoned parcel in the Hilltop area that could be converted into a community garden.  Since they have had so much interest (over twenty people are now involved), they feel that several community gardens could be set up over time.
