Save Our Trees!

Please help improve the aesthetics of the Hilltop area by retaining our trees and other plantings whenever possible.  Excessive cutting can make yards look sad and barren, and it drastically lowers the curb appeal.  A diminished tree population impacts our neighborhood in more ways than one.

Why Cutting is Bad

  • Trees are essential for stormwater management and help prevent runoff and soil erosion.

  • Trees provide nesting grounds or hunting perches for various wildlife species (owls, hawks, bats) which keep the rodent and mosquito population down.

  • A strong concentration of greenery helps to keep the air cleaner, which is important since we are surrounded by heavy traffic roads (Newark Ave, the turnpike, etc.).  Much of this bad air can be trapped and cleansed by trees, bushes and hedges.  Heavy flora is not only beautiful but produces abundant oxygen year 'round.

  • Trees and heavy flora help to reduce noise pollution.

It’s not just aesthetics, it’s $$$

Landscaping is a vital element in property value.  Property values of homes with trees are up to 20% higher than equivalent properties without trees.

For statistics, see these websites:

Going Green

More and more companies are “going green” – establishing programs to plant more trees as a way to offset their “carbon footprint” (the green-house gases and pollution they generate from manufacturing and energy consumption).

We all have a carbon footprint too – from our car exhaust to the energy used by our appliances.  So we should all be planting MORE trees in our neighborhood, not cutting down the ones we already have.

Cutting is a decision which can last a lifetime

Some species of trees can be grown to full height in a few years.  However, others may take many decades to reach maturity.  Once you cut our trees, it changes the look of the neighborhood for a very long time.  Please avoid cutting whenever possible.  Thank you.
